Bio

Robert Ariail has been creating award winning cartoons in South Carolina for 40 years. His work is distributed to over 600 newspapers by Andrews McMeel Syndication.

Robert’s cartoons have won international, national, regional and state awards including: The National Association of Alternative Newsmedia Award, 2023 ( for his Lowcountry strip; The National Press Foundation’s Berryman Award, 2012; The United Nations Ranan Lurie Award, 2009; The Overseas Press Club’s Thomas Nast Award, 1997; The Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award, 1992; The National Headliner Award,1990; The Society of Professional Journalists’ Green Eyeshade Award ( seven times ); The S.C. Press Association’s President’s Award for lifetime achievement, 2016 and The Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the arts ( South Carolina’s highest award in the arts ), 2012.

Ariail was also a Finalist for The Pulitzer Prize three times.

Robert Ariail is a South Carolina native and University of South Carolina graduate.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the AAEC is to champion and defend editorial cartooning and free speech as essential to liberty in the United States and throughout the world.

The AAEC aims to be an international leader in support of the human, civil, and artistic rights of editorial cartoonists around the world, and to stand with other international groups in support of the profession.

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
