Bio

Kevin Necessary is award-winning editorial cartoonist, illustrator and comics journalist in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the 2023 vice president of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

Most recently, Kevin was the freelance editorial cartoonist for The Cincinnati Enquirer. His work appeared in USA Today and in various Gannett newspapers. He was also syndicated by GoComics.com.

Previously, Kevin was the staff cartoonist and comics journalist for WCPO-TV in Cincinnati. While at WCPO, Kevin illustrated a children’s book, My Best Friend Fiona, about the popular hippopotamus at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, and wrote and drew multiple comics journalism stories. His online comics journalism graphic novel, Living in the Shadows, earned him two regional Edward R. Murrow awards and an Emmy. Kevin also works as a freelance illustrator, and has provided work for clients such as Hasbro, Grey Global, and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Medical Center.

The mission of the AAEC is to champion and defend editorial cartooning and free speech as essential to liberty in the United States and throughout the world.

The AAEC aims to be an international leader in support of the human, civil, and artistic rights of editorial cartoonists around the world, and to stand with other international groups in support of the profession.
