Ward Sutton named 2022 Berryman Award Winner

Boston Globe cartoonist Ward Sutton has won the 2022 Clifford K. and James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons, according to the National Press Foundation.

“Ward Sutton’s cartoons all illustrate the power of direct impact, but the more you look at them, the more you see their nuance and complexity,” NPF’s judges said.  They called Sutton’s portfolio “just powerful.”

Sutton has been the Boston Globe’s editorial cartoonist since 2008. His work has also appeared in The New YorkerThe Los Angeles TimesThe New York TimesPoliticoThe NationThe OnionThe Village Voice and The Nib.

The Berryman award is given in memory of a father and son who were both Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonists and represent the highest standards of illustration and journalism. Sutton will accept the award at NPF’s annual awards dinner in February 2023.
