Transportation to the AAEC Venues in Sacramento

Scott Burns is one of our AAEC co-hosts on the ground in Sacramento, and has the following transportation advice for getting around town during the convention. This is the guide that will be in the welcome packet, but we're posting it here so those cartoonists attending can plan accordingly.

You can also download a map of Sac and the final convention schedule at: https://www.japenet.net/single-post/2018/09/18/AAEC-Sacramento-schedule

Due to circumstances, we had to make a couple of late venue changes. Alas, the AAEC’s budget does not accommodate a fleet of stretch limos so we must adapt using a combination of foot, light rail, and Uber/Lyft. We will have two small shuttles for those who are physically or technically challenged.

Just remember: All venues are conveniently located on a rectangular grid. Numbered streets run east-west. Lettered streets run north-south. See map link here:

The Citizen Hotel is at the corner of 10th and J Streets.

Thursday evening:
Rex Babin Exhibition/Welcome Reception.
The California Museum is at 10th and O Streets—a 5-block walk due south. [10 minutes]

Friday sessions:
The Library Galleria is at 828 I Street.
A diagonal walk across the park/plaza directly opposite the hotel. The meeting room entrance is the first set of doors closest to the corner of 9th & I streets.

Friday evening:
McKay Coppins
Sierra 2 Theatre, 2791 24th Street.
For adventurous walkers, 2.5 miles from the hotel. [45-50 minutes] Otherwise, Uber/Lyft is a 10-minute $9 ride. We have a café/brewpub reserved near the theater from 430-630 p.m. for those who prefer to simply head there and hang out. Details when you register. You can also take light rail—a 15-minute ride from downtown that will get you within an 8-block walk of the theater. Light rail maps and schedules will be available at registration. There will also be two small shuttles from the hotel to Sierra 2 for those who need them; we will take signups during registration. After Coppins, we assume many of you will begin your pub-crawls through midtown (a $5-$8 Uber/Lyft ride) but the two shuttles and several volunteer drivers will be available for those who prefer to return to the hotel.

Saturday day sessions:
The Bee is at 21st and Q Streets
11 blocks east and 7 blocks south, a 30-minute walk for those who want or need exercise. Light rail to the Bee is a 10-minute ride and gets within one block of the Bee. But, with an 8 a.m. start Uber/Lyft is recommended—a $5-6 ride. Again, two small shuttles will be available for those who need them.

Saturday afternoon:
Back to Sierra 2 for the Cartoonist Cage Match:
No public transportation available from the Bee. It is a 1.2 mile walk [30 minutes] or $5-$6 via Uber/Lyft. Again, shuttles will be available before/after for those who need them.

Saturday Gala:
At the hotel.

Sunday Brunch:
Scott Burns home
1224 40th Ave. About 5 miles south of the hotel and no public transportation available.
A $12 Uber/Lyft ride, but we assume many of you have early flights home and it’s possible we can accommodate those attending with our two shuttles. We will take a survey during registration.

For those with later flights, it is about a $20-$25 Uber/Lyft from Scott’s home to the airport.
