Remembering Charlie Hebdo 5 years later

This week saw the 5th anniversary of the deadly terrorist attack on the Parisian weekly satirical Charlie Hebdo. France and cartoonists worldwide remember.

The cartoonists and satirists of #CharlieHebdo never wanted to be martyrs for #freespeech. This Washington Post piece from 2018 looks at the uneasy fit.

Five years after the massacre, many cartoonists think satire is in trouble and that the terrorists won — aided by fearful editors, cowardly censors, cynical politicians, and an angry public. The feeling of unity under “Je Suis Charlie” is gone say some.

Finally — even as politicians and censors clamp down on #FreeSpeech, France plans to build a “centre dedicated to satirical cartoons”

The Daily Cartoonist has a roundup of the roundups as cartoonists mark this tragic anniversary.
