Post-Convention report: Cartoonists win New York Marathon!

Last week's annual Association of American Editorial Cartoonists Convention at Hofstra University on Long Island was one for the books. A big congratulations to host Matt Davies and President Ann Telnaes for pulling off a memorable gathering! It was a fitting 60th anniversary celebration for our organization.

The weather was delightful for this time of year (thanks Global Warming!) and the amazing luncheon at the Society of Illustrators was worth the effort it took to get into Manhattan. One cartoonist was overheard saying it was one of the best days of his life.

Other highlights included the blistering tour-de-force of Martin Rowson's Thursday night monologue (can that cat scat or what?), a once-in-a-lifetime talk with Ed Sorel on Friday, and a big finale Saturday with Al Jaffee and the staff of MAD Magazine.

As always, there were a lot of good panels, a lot of great drinking (seriously, Martin Rowson has like 50 new best friends), and one of the finest closing banquets we've ever had.

If you missed any of the convention, ace reporter Mike Peterson posted daily updates at his blog.

Also, the post-con articles are beginning to roll in, including one by Nell Minow over on HuffPo, and Michael Cavna at WaP  on this year's Courage in Cartooning recipient.

Speaking of awards, a big congrats to Dwane Powell for winning the first Rex Babin Memorial Award for Editorial Cartooning, Damian Alexander for the John Locher Award, and Joel Pett on receiving the Ink Bottle Award.

Photos are continuing to pop up online; look for them over on the AAEC Facebook page.

Finally, a big thanks to Newsday (who turns out to really really like editorial cartoonists) and Hofstra University for hosting the AAEC. #CartoonistsHofstra

See you next year in Sacramento!
