The Daily Cartoonist has two items on editorial cartoonists who lost gigs recently. The Worcester Business Journal dropped Don Landgren after a cartoon of his was accused of being racist. The editor (who approved and ran the cartoon) apologized profusely for the mistake (without admitting to their part in the process) before stating the paper had fired the contributor with the euphemism “we’ve decided to move in a different direction.”
Landgren has a different take on the reason he was dropped, which he discusses in a fb post:
Money may also be the reason for the recent news that Gannett had dropped the daily political strip Mallard Fillmore at every paper in the chain. The Washington Times has been spinning this as another example of leftist cancel culture run amok, though the simple fact is Gannett is actually GateHouse Media now, having been absorbed in a merger in 2019 — and GateHouse has a history of canning cartoonists.
One of GateHouse’s first act after purchasing the storied chain was to fire the last of its staff cartoonists. Since the takeover, Gatehouse has purged at least 40% of its personnel and slashed content in an effort to cut expenses, and showed no sign of stopping in 2021.
