Bio

Cartooning is Tom’s life.

He started as a child and hasn’t stopped. Born and raised in Philadelphia, drawing has been a great way to support a serious cheese steak addiction.

While in high school, his first cartoon was published by the Philadelphia Daily News.

He attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia and graduated in June 1988.

Tom is a nationally syndicated political cartoonist whose work is distributed by Creators Syndicate. His cartoons have appeared in the USA Today, The New York Times, FoxNews.com, US News and World Report, THE WEEK, The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Newsweek Japan, TIME magazine, TIME.com, Chicago Sun-Times, The Los Angeles Times, Mad Kids magazine and in the annual book series ‘Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year.’

He is a three-time recipient for the Citation of Excellence award from the United Nations and currently has a cartoon on exhibit at the Charles M. Schulz museum in Santa Rosa, California.

In 2012, Tom took first place in Greater Philadelphia’s Society of Professional Journalists for Editorial Cartoons.

His editorial cartoons appear in newspapers throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Tom is a member of the National Cartoonists Society and the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
