Bio

Phil Hands is the editorial cartoonist for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, Wis. He is the only cartoonist on the staff of a newspaper in Wisconsin.

Phil is a fierce political moderate whose cartoons attack the extremists on both the left and the right. He learned long ago that no political party has a monopoly on bad ideas.

His cartoons have appeared in publications like USA TodayNewsweekTime and The Washington Post. Phil has won a number of state awards for editorial cartooning and was the 2012 recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi award for editorial cartooning for newspapers with circulation under 100,000.

Born in Syracuse, N.Y., Phil grew up in the Detroit area before moving to Wisconsin in 2005. He is a graduate of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Phil lives in Madison with his very understanding wife, Tricia, and two adorable children, Owen and Claire. In his spare time he enjoys drinking coffee, eating cheese and being cold.

Awards: Pulitzer Prize finalist (2008)

Milwaukee Press Club (2005) (2006) (2007)

SPJ Mark of excellence  (2007)

Associated Collegiate Press (2007)

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
