Profile
Bio
Nineteen years ago Eric J. Garcia began creating satirical drawings while serving in the U.S. Air Force. At first it was to make fun of his buddies and to relieve the monotony on post, but soon he began drawing more serious subject matter like critiquing the military itself. Completed his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Garcia is published nationally and internationally, and can be seen in publications and online news networks such as Contratiempo, Pocho.com, and The Black Commentator. With the help of his usual cast of iconic characters, Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and the infamous Fat Cat, his cartoons are sharp critiques of our society’s complex past and our society’s confusing present. For over a decade García has been serving up inked visuals with the sharpest of political critiques through a Chicano lens. If you’re looking for funny punch lines, these aren’t the cartoons for you. But if you want to pull down Uncle Sam’s pants and see what’s really going on, look no further.
His new book Drawing on Anger:Portraits of U.S. Hypocrisy, published by Ohio State University Press, is out now.
