Profile

Bio

Personal

Born in Pennsylvania, raised in South Carolina and Michigan, John started drawing comics when he was eight-years-old. He’s married now (to his high-school sweetheart), has three beautiful children, two needy cats, and works as a marketing and technical communications specialist, but can still be found more often than not hunched over his drawing table.

Education

John has a Bachelor of Science degree in Scientific and Technical Communications with a minor in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University. This would be the proverbial “road less traveled” to a career in cartooning.

Awards

John’s cartoons have been stuck on refrigerators, office cubicles, and bulletin boards — the highest award a cartoonist can hope for. He has drawn comics for various newspapers, magazines, companies, and websites. Primary clients: Grand Rapids Business Journal, Grand Rapids Press, MLive newspapers, MLive.com, and presently MichiganPublic.org (previously MichiganRadio.org) as well as being syndicated through the Michigan Press Association

Quote

Everybody can draw. John is living proof of this. Through practice and a willingness to take chances, he has taken a seed of meager artistic talent and grown it into a flourishing hibiscus of meager artistic talent.

CSotD: From the Mouths (and noses) of Babes

Remember that brief moment during the campaign, when progressives began describing Trump and his coterie as “weird”? It had tangible impact, but it seemed unpleasant...

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.

CARTOONS FOR THE CLASSROOM

Cartoons in Education

Every two weeks throughout the year, The Learning Forum and the AAEC offers CARTOONS FOR THE CLASSROOM, a free lesson resource for teachers discussing current events.  Visit NIEonline.com for more lesson plans.
