Ron
Hill
Chagrin Valley Times, Solon Times, Geauga Times Courier, West Life
Ron Hill has been providing editorial cartoons to the Chagrin Valley Times group of journalism award-winning weekly newspapers since 1999, where he currently provides 2 editorial cartoons in the form of his BB BluesBird comic strip since January of 2020. In addition, he has waged many other battles in his cartoon and illustration career: he has drawn for many Dungeons & Dragons types of role-playing games, illuminated fifteen volumes of the Presbyterian Publishing Company’s Armchair Theologian series, been sued (unsuccessfully) for defamation by a notoriously litigious coal magnate over an editorial cartoon in 2013, and he has been writing and drawing tens of thousands of editorial cartoons, comic strips, illustrations and caricatures since the late ’70s. A native Greater Clevelander and 1982 graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, he is once again (as of 2023) a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists. In June of 2023, he completed the documentary film Go-kart Therapy, and is currently directing We Are Doc Savage: A Documentary on Fandom. Ron lives and works out of his home in Solon, Ohio. The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.
The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio — and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
Every two weeks throughout the year, The Learning Forum and the AAEC offers CARTOONS FOR THE CLASSROOM, a free lesson resource for teachers discussing current events. Visit NIEonline.com for more lesson plans.
