Sunshine Week

Fellow cartoonists,

This is from Anders Gyllenhaal, Vice President for News at McClatchy and a member of the ASNE Board of Directors. He’d like us to contribute cartoons about Sunshine Week, which is March 15-21. Please consider doing a cartoon for this important week. Thanks! – Jack

“We're hoping we can put together a rich gallery of cartoons that we'll circulate as a part of the Sunshine Week celebration, which will be march 15-21. The cartoons will be posted on the ASNE website for members to pick up and publish, and we'll also build a gallery for publishers to use. This would be one part of a broader package of coverage, including a deep takeout on the state of openness and information, an essay on the importance of transparency, the cartoons, and graphics on the historical record on freedom of information.

This year will be the 10th anniversay of Sunshine Week, so the focus of our coverage that will go out as part of this will be what has happened to government access over the past decade

The editorial cartoons on open government issues generally and Sunshine Week specifically that so many cartoonists have donated to the participants' Toolkit each year have helped place a spotlight on the many issues around official transparency. And, of course, people love them.

The cartoons, like all our materials, will be free to participants during Sunshine Week (with some wiggle room before/after for pre-approved student papers, weeklies, etc. on different production schedules.) After Sunshine Week, to protect your copyright, we will remove from the website the larger, hi-res images for production and leave only a smaller image for the gallery (https://sunshineweek.rcfp.org/the-sw-vault/).

Folks should send submissions to: sunshineweek@asne.org. If you have any questions, you can direct them to Deb Gersh Hernandez at the Sunshine Week email or dghernandez@rcfp.org.”
