EPPYs and other End of the Year Competition News

Wrapping up the 2023 contests, Editor & Publisher recently announced the winners of its annual EPPY Awards that “honor the best in digital news publishing.”

In the Best Editorial/Political Cartoon Category, Ward Sutton won 1st place in the division for 1 million or more visitors for his work at The Boston Globe, while Dennis Draughon won 1st place in the division for 1 million or fewer visitors for his cartoons appearing on the Capitol Broadcasting Company media site. Nick Anderson of RA News was named runner-up for his work at ReligionUnplugged.com.

The E&P judge’s commented: “Straight forward, context and perspective clearly given. Very solid political cartoons. Exactly what Art is meant to be — jarring, leaves you uncomfortable, but forever thinking about what we can do differently.” Congrats all!

And in a bit of cross continental fun, in December Kevin “Kal” Kallaugher made it to the semifinal round of the The UK Illustration Championships, a real-time draw-off with the winner selected by a panel of judges and live online voting by the audience watching on Twitch. Kal noted, “the organizers have supplied me and my adversary a news story for us to study. When the starting gun goes [off], we have exactly 60 minutes to complete a pertinent illustration. We are limited to using only 8 tools for the task: Pencils, pens, ink paint and brush etc. Plus we are limited to using only 8 words!”

After the match Kal posted: “In an incredibly tight contest I fell in the Semi-Finals to the eventual champion. I won a majority of the points from the judges but lost the “winner-take-all” social vote by a whisker. I am told that by virtue of my high finish in the tournament, I will get an invitation to the Masters World Illustrators Championships in the Summer of 2024.”
