Cartoonists for the Cause — Covid relief fundraisers

Two Pennsylvania cartoonists are offering signed art in fundraisers and auctions to help out local institutions.

Philadelphia’s Signe Wilkinson is offering signed prints of her cartoons in exchange for contributions to one of the funds helping beleaguered health care workers. Signe supports Temple University Hospital which, she notes, “really stepped up when beds were needed and is now the epicenter of the city’s Covid-19 cases.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist will send you a signed print contribution of $30 or more

In the meantime, Harrisburg native and Durham, NC cartoonist Jape (full disclosure, that’s me) is auctioning off an original prop he built for alt-weekly Indy Week in 2011. The one-of-a-kind 3-D cartoon was constructed for a cover story on college basketball.

“I found it recently while cleaning out my studio, and decided to restore it to its original glory. There’s a Food Bank distribution node at the church in our neighborhood and every week the line for food gets longer when they open. This week it wrapped around our city block so it is painfully obvious the need is growing.”

Proceeds from the auction will be split between the Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC and the Indy Week itself. Better hurry though — that auction ends Friday at 2:30pm. Click here to bid: eBay Auction

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
