AAEC + CXC — Two weekends of adventures in cartooning

11 SacAAEC Rex Babin Award

The AAEC had two big weekends in a row, first in Sacramento for their annual convention, and then at CXC in Columbus, Ohio, (which is fast becoming one of the best comics art festivals in the country). Several reports came out in the wake of the Sacramento confab:

• Graphic novelist Brian Fies ("A Fire Story") was a guest speaker at this year's gathering, and files his thoughts on the annual confab.

• Canadian cartoonist Graeme MacKay sends his a detailed missive back from south of the border on this year's gathering of political cartoonists in Sacramento

• Finally, cartoonist Nathan Archer, whose birthday fell in the middle of this year's gathering of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, writes about his adventure in Sacramento.

If you want to see what you missed — or are trying to remember what happened — here are just some of the shots of #SacAAEC on facebook and a photo thread on Twitter.

The following weekend, a bunch of cartoonists (including Ann Telnaes, Signe Wilkinson, Kevin Siers, Rob Rogers, Nate Beeler, Darrin Bell and JP Trostle) headed to Columbus, Ohio. As always, Mike Peterson did yeoman's work in covering the AAEC panels at CXC and other events at 4-day long free festival.

And now, here's a picture of Ben Sargent drawing

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
