The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists opposes the use of AI images generated from copyrighted artwork. Editorial cartoons rely on original points of view, expressed through a cartoonist’s unique artistry and skill. The use of AI-generated images in commercial settings not only removes the artist from the artwork, but it creates situations where artists are deprived of opportunities to make a living.
The AAEC stands in solidarity with other creatives who do not want their livelihoods threatened by AI. The AAEC will not accept as a member any individual who uses AI-generated imagery in their membership application, nor will AI-generated imagery be allowed as submissions for our awards.
The AAEC also admonishes any editor, publisher, news outlet or corporate media chain who is considering using AI-generated content as a way to cut costs and misappropriate copyrighted work.Â
