Online chats in October

Several additional cartoonist roundtables are on the schedule this month:

1) Super short notice but — Ann Telnaes just notified us that she’ll be on an online panel tonight, Oct. 13 at 6pm, with Barry Blitt and Pia Guerra as they explore the art of political cartooning with Scott Simon, host of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday. If you’re able to “attend”, better register now:

2) Next up: Adam Zyglis, this year’s winner of The Award Formerly Known as The Thomas Nast, sits down with Rob Rogers for an online session they’re calling “OPC Award Winners Share Their Stories.” This event requires registration, but you better hurry: it’s happening tomorrow, Wednesday Oct. 14, from 6-7pm.

3) If you’d like to see a cartoonist in person, KAL is doing a (now rare) book signing on Saturday, Oct. 17, as part of the exhibit of his work at the Crystal Moll Gallery in Baltimore. The Artist Reception for the show runs 4-6 pm, and will (of course) be streamed online if you can’t make it in person:

4) Block out Friday night, Oct 22, and Saturday afternoon, Oct. 24 for a live (and no doubt lively) conversation: The Future of American Political Cartoons: A Symposium in Honor of Pat Oliphant.

The two day streaming event by the University of Virginia Library includes Keith Knight, Jen Sorensen, Matt Bors, Adam Zyglis, Signe Wilkinson, Rob Rogers, Ann TelnaesKevin Kallaugher, and of course, Pat Oliphant. Registration is required, so sign up now:

— If you’ve missed Keith Knight‘s powerful and timely presentation in the past, here’s your chance to finally catch “Red, White, Black, and Blue: Highlighting America’s Racial Illiteracy” on Friday at 7pm.

Saturday afternoon will see a trio of conversations:

— Rob Rogers, Jen Sorensen and Adam Zyglis will discuss “Challenges to Freedom of Expression in Political Cartooning Today”

— Matt Bors and Signe Wilkinson will chat about “Drawing for a Polarized Public”

— And finally, Kevin KallaugherAnn Telnaes and Tom Gibson will tackle the existential question “Extinction or Evolution?: Imagining the Future of Political Cartoons”

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio —  and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
