Clay Bennett wins 2018 Nast Award; KAL Citated

Clay Bennett has won his Third Thomas Nast Award from the Overseas Press Club of America. The Chattanooga Times Free Press staffer was honored for his portfolio of cartoons on international affairs.

Kevin "KAL" Kallaugher was named a Citation Winner for his work in The Economist.

In a statement on the award recipients, the Press Club noted "Clay Bennett's deceptively simple cartoons, often without captions, drive home strong, perceptive messages on topics ranging from global warming, immigration, North Korea's nuclear program and Vladimir Putin, to Donald Trump's handling of complex foreign policy issues."

"Clever ideas and an engaging style make for a memorable portfolio."

Now in its 79th year, the Overseas Press Club Awards recognize the finest international journalism in print, broadcast and online news. Award recipients in 22 categories will be honored at a banquet in New York City in April.

"I feel very honored, if not a little out of place, to be included in such a distinguished group of journalists" Bennett told the Times Free Press. "Maybe I'll seem more respectable, if only by association."

This is Bennett's third Thomas Nast Award. He's also received the Sigma Delta Chi Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and the National Headliner Award. Bennett, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002, has been a finalist for the prestigious honor a record seven times. His work is syndicated in about 100 newspapers through the Washington Post Writers Group.

The OPC also cited Kal Kallaugher's international cartoonist in The Economist. Kallaugher has won the Thomas Nast Award a total of four times, and was recently named the 2017 Clifford K. and James T. Berryman Award winner.

LOCHER FELLOWSHIP

The AAEC John Locher Memorial Fellowship is awarded each year to one early-career cartoonist whose work demonstrates clear opinions and strong artistry on political and social topics. Deadline to be considered is the end of March.

The Locher Fellow will receive a one-year Regular membership in the AAEC, be a guest of the CXC Festival — held every fall in Columbus, Ohio — and have the opportunity to meet with editorial cartoonists during the year of the Fellowship for portfolio reviews and career advice.
