2022 Locher Award Winner Announced

A big congratulations to cartoonist Masha Zhdanova (@mashazart), this year’s winner of the John Locher Memorial Award. The jury noted “her short comics lend insight into authoritarianism and provide intimate viewpoints from the war in Ukraine.”

Congrats too to Alexandra Bowman (@scripta_bene) for being named Runner-up for the editorial cartoonist award. Bowman is a recent graduate of Georgetown and the creator of The Hilltop Show, the university’s political comedy show.

Finally, cartoonist Han Hampy (@Han_Hampy) was named for her Outstanding Submission, an illustrated essay on the Supreme Court Decision to overturn of Roe vs Wade. You can see more of her work here.

This year’s Locher Award will be presented at the AAEC convention during the CXC Festival in Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 6-9.

The AAEC/John Locher Memorial Award was founded in 1986, in honor of the late son of Dick and Mary Locher. Dick Locher was a Pulitzer-prize winning editorial cartoonist, and drew the “Dick Tracy” comic strip until his retirement in 2011. He and Mary hoped the prize would help discover young cartoonists and stimulate interest in editorial cartooning among college-age students. For more on the award go to locheraward.org.
