2010 Golden Spike Award

“This cartoon,” Rob explained, “was supposed to run on Good Friday. After I completed the cartoon and had already emailed it out for syndication my publisher killed it. He felt it was too controversial to run on Easter weekend. Much to my surprise and delight, it ran a week later as the top cartoon in USA Today’s Friday roundup.”

Presenter's Remarks by Milt Prigee

2010 has been an interesting year. I mean for years … excuse me, decades, I've been telling all you guys that this is not our father’s profession. Once, newspapers protected their assets from any and all kinds of “chilling effects.” But today’s newspaper editors and publishers ARE the “chilling effect!”

I grew up with Paul Conrad bugling the charge: “Don’t Illustrate, Opinionate!”

But alas, even illustrator Tom Richmond, who submitted his congressional caricature app, was rejected by the Apple App Store people, as were Cagle and Fiore for their cartoon apps. All three denied the right to exist in Steve Jobs toy box.

Denied, rejected. Rejected BECAUSE … they ridiculed public figures!

The Apple gatekeepers — just like our editors — are using our ACTUAL job description as their reason and justification for suppressing the freedom of expression.

Indeed this has been a very interesting year.

So even though Mark Fiore won the Pulitzer and some write-in votes for his spiked cartoon app, this year’s Golden Spike goes to that pedophile- protecting Pope- and Catholic-basher … Rob Rogers!

Acceptance Speech:

“I knew pedophilia would pay off for me some day. Those of you who have seen my new book know that it is quite heavy … well, now I have TWO doorstops! Thank you very much.”
