Kelley Scoops Scripps Howard Prize
Steve Kelley is this year's winner in the editorial cartooning category of
the Scripps Howard Foundation's National Journalism Awards.
The other finalists were Mike Lester of the Rome News-Tribune in Georgia and Michael Ramirez of Investor's Business Daily. Ramirez won the Fischetti editorial cartooning prize earlier this week.
Kelley, who draws for the The Times-Picayune in New Orleans and Creators Syndicate, will receive $10,000 and a trophy. The judges cited his work for "his ability to weave words and imagery and for his use of irony to satirize some of the year's headlines, such as the war in Iraq, dog fighting, and alleged steroid use by Major League Baseball players."
Meanwhile, William Warren of Wake Forest University won the Scripps contest's Charles M. Schulz Award for his "Lummox" comic strip. Warren also received the Association of American Editorial Cartoonist's John Locher Memorial Award in 2006.
