Winter Cartoon Briefs
Tim Jackson was recently interviewed on Chicago Public Radio for "A Conversation about Jackie Ormes and the History of African American Newspaper Cartoonists."
Jackie Ormes, the first African American woman cartoonist, was an artist of conscience ahead of her time, an activist and a prominent figure in the Chicago Renaissance. Nancy Goldstein, author of the first book devoted to Ormes and her work, and Jackson, whose work appears in the Chicago Defender and other newspapers across the country, talk to host Donna Seaman. David Horsey is one of several editorial cartoonists in the exhibit "Left, Right, & Wrong: Celebrating the Art of Editorial Cartooning," showing now through March 31 at The Art Institute of Seattle. Presented by Cartoonists Northwest (CNW), the show celebrates the artistry of political and editorial cartooning, and features some of the Northwest?s most notable cartoonists. John Trever has published his third collection of editorial cartoons from
the Albuquerque Journal. Titled "Mañana Republic", this 224-page
volume focuses on New Mexico and its entertaining politics. Trever has been
the Journal's cartoonist for 31 years and is part of the editorial cartoonists'
package at King Features. Two earlier collections, featuring his syndicated
work, The Trever Gallery: A Public Hanging and The Trever GallerY2K: Drawing
Fire, were released in 1992 and 1999, respectively.
