Keefe Catches 2007 Fischetti
Mike Keefe of The Denver Post is this year's winner of the Fischetti Editorial Cartoon Competition.
Clay Bennett, of The Christian Science Monitor, and Steve Sack, of The Minneapolis Star Tribune, received Honorable Mentions.
A panel of judges chose the winning entries from a field of 216 cartoons submitted by 72 editorial cartoonists. Keefe will receive the $4,000 grand prize and Bennett and Sack $1,000 each. While in Chicago on April 30 for the awards ceremony, they will talk with students, the public and local media about their work.
The panel discussion, awards ceremony and reception will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 30 at Columbia?s Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash, 8th floor. The event is free and open to the public. For further information call 312-344-8954 or write jsulski@colum.edu
In addition to the afternoon event, the 2007 winners will be honored at a private evening reception at The Hilligoss Gallery on Michigan Avenue. The reception will feature an auction of editorial cartoons donated by Fischetti winners, past and present. These cartoons will be on exhibit at the Hilligoss Gallery beginning Friday, April 27. All proceeds from the auction benefit the Fischetti Scholarship Fund.
This year marked the 25th time the Columbia College in Chicago has given the award. John Fischetti was a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist whose work was published in the New York Herald-Tribune, the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times. Shortly after his death in 1980, friends created the endowment in his honor, which has helped educate more than 400 Columbia College students, many of them now award-winning journalists themselves.
