Wuerker Meets Office
Matt Wuerker announced last week that he will be the staff cartoonist for The Capitol Leader when the new Washington, D.C. newspaper launches on Nov. 21. The Capitol Leader will be competing with Roll Call and the Hill, and will publish three times a week when Congress is in session. This will be the first staff job for Wuerker, who has made a successful living as a full-time freelancer for the last 25 years.
"I've been self-employed for so long I just pray I remember to pull my pants on when I go to work," wrote Wuerker in an e-mail.
"I heard about them a couple months ago and impulsively sent them samples ... and they went and hired me," he added. "[My] editor ... sees the intrinsic value of having original cartoons from an in-house cartoonist. Imagine that!"
In addition to drawing the editorial cartoon, Wuerker will provide the Leader with caricatures and art for other parts of the paper. His new schedule also allows Wuerker to keep doing freelance work and "some Flash stuff I'm working on."
