Musa Kart Wins Press Freedom Award
Via the Comics Reporter, we learned last week that Turkish cartoonist Musa Kart has won the 2006 Freedom of the Press Award on behalf of all cartoonists in Turkey. Kart was a guest speaker at the 2005 AAEC Convention, and the recipient of that year's Courage in Cartooning Award from the Cartoonists Rights Network. Several years ago, Kart was legally antagonized by Turkey's Prime Minister Recip Tayyip Erdogan for drawing the political figure as a cat. Another Freedom of the Press award also went to Turkish Judge Mithat Ali Kabaali for ruling the cartoon did not constitute an attack on personal rights. The awards will be presented to the winnners at Dolmabahce Palace on July 24.
