Wright Takes Buyout
Larry Wright has accepted a voluntary buyout package from The Detroit News effective at the end of April.
In an e-mail, Wright announced: “I will continue to draw three edit cartoons a week for the News on a free-lance basis and have agreed to be a website consultant, but I will no longer have to make the daily 60-mile roundtrip into downtown.
In a later conversation, Wright went into a few details:
“The buyouts were part of the changes in the Detroit JOA resulting from last fall’s sale of both papers.
“The publisher suggested I continue drawing edit toons while we were negotiating a consultant role on the website (I’m one of only two people on the staff who knows our database system) and I’ve known the editorial page editor for 30 years.
“I feel reasonably sure that the arrangement will last as long as I want it to.”
He added: “My detnews.com email address will still be good.”
Wright has been the cartoonist for the Detroit News since 1976, and is a past president of the AAEC.Wright was also the long-time steward of the AAEC Web site, helping the Association merge onto the Information Superhighway back when it was still called the Information Superhighway.
