AAEC Bids Nicholson Farewell; Welcomes New Management Firm

OCTOBER 31 - Today marks the final day for Wanda Nicholson as General Manager of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists. Beginning November 1, management of the group will go to the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association.

Nicholson, who announced her retirement this summer at the 2005 Convention in Sacramento, has run the AAEC since 1998, first as part of the staff of Olson Management in Raleigh, N.C., and later through her own firm, WRN & Associates.

"The AAEC will miss Wanda Nicholson both personally and professionally," said AAEC President Clay Bennett. "We wish her the very best as she runs screaming from the job that she's held for the past eight years."

In a farewell note to the editorial cartoonists, Nicholson wrote: "Your ability to crystallize an idea and communicate it with a picture and a few words is an important gift to our world. More than ever, we need people such as you to speak out and make us think. You do make a difference!"

Nicholson won't completely cut her ties to the organization, however, and plans to stay on as an Associate Member.

Effective November 1, Nicholson will hand over the reins of the AAEC to the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA).

PNA was signed to a 3-year management contract in late October, after an extensive nationwide search.

Founded as an association of Pennsylvania newspapers publishers in 1925, PNA currently manages its own organization of over 300 newspaper and affiliate members and provides management and administrative services for other media organizations such as the Pennsylvania Society of Newspaper Editors and the National Conference of Editorial Writers.

"Editorial cartoonists, like other working journalists today, are bearing the brunt of some disturbing trends within the newspaper industry", said Bennett.

"Consequently, our organization is taking on a more proactive role to both serve our membership and promote our profession. With the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association as our management, the AAEC will be well equipped to fulfill that mission."
