Steve Breen takes San Diego Union-Tribune job

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Steve Breen will join the Union-Tribune July 9.

Steve's cartoons from the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey are nationally syndicated by Copley New Service and his comic strip, "Grand Avenue," appears in more than 150 newspapers.

Born and raised in Southern California, Steve, 31, received a political science degree from UC-Riverside, where his cartoons for the student newspaper won prestigious awards.

Steve earned his Pulitzer in 1998 for a portfolio that included cartoons on O.J. Simpson, the Clinton administration's campaign finance scandal, human cloning and Princess Diana.

Asked whether his new surroundings may inspire him differently, Steve said: "Politics is pretty much the same wherever you go -- it's the faces that change. We have our fair share of colorful characters here in New Jersey, but I feel confident that within a few months I'll learn who to set my sights on in California. Besides, it feels like I'm coming home -- as a kid, our family used to vacation in San Diego every summer."

We're happy that this time, Steve will be moving his own family -- wife Cathy, 2-year-old son Thomas and week-old Patrick -- to San Diego for more than just the summers.
