Worth Mentioning

The group that takes care of George Washington’s historical estate, Mt. Vernon, recently commissioned three political cartoons for an exhibit at the property. WALT HANDELSMAN, MIKE PETERS and STEVE KELLEY each produced a piece about a key event during Washington’s presidency. (Handelsman’s take on the Whiskey Rebellion is on the left, and Kelley’s cartoon on the Jay Treaty is on the right.) The exhibit will be up later this year. The Mt. Vernon Estate and Gardens overlooks the Potomac River and is just 16 miles south of Washington, D.C. at the end of the GW Parkway in Virginia.

A life-sized bronze statue by HY ROSEN of Albany Mayor Thomas M. Whalen III and his faithful dog, Finn McCool, was dedicated in May. About 300 friends, family and former colleagues of the late mayor gathered for the official unveiling. The bronze sculpture is in a small park across from an Albany train station Whalen helped save.

DAVID WALLIS, editor of “Too Hot to Print,” is still looking for contributions to his next book, “Killed Cartoons,” which will be published in 2006 by W.W. Norton.

Wallis writes, “I plan to publish provocative cartoons and illustrations that prestigious magazines and newspapers rejected — not because of quality — but because of their potential for controversy.”

Several renowned cartoonists and illustrators, including Ted Rall, J.D. Crowe, and Kirk Anderson, have already agreed to contribute work to the book. Each artist will be interviewed for a brief introduction to explain why their work was killed. Contributors will receive a modest honorarium.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS NOVEMBER. Please email any submissions, preferably as JPEGS or TIFFs, to drwallis@hotmail.com and please carbon copy (cc) wallis@featurewell.com. You can fax drawings to 212-989-8445.

[Also, David said he is having problems receiving submissions “because spam filters kick in sometimes whether he wants them to or not, so please mention that cartoonists should call (212) 924-2283 if they receive no confirmation within say three days of sending a submission.”]

LALO ALCARAZ’s “Pocho Hour of Power,” an hour long talk radio show on Pacifica’s KPFK 90.7 FM, has entered syndication on public community radio station WRTE 90.5 FM in Chicago, the nation’s third largest Latino market.

The show, broadcast in Los Angeles every Friday from 4-5 p.m. PST, has steadily gained in popularity and garnered a cult following in the southland.

Several syndicated cartoonists are scheduled to appear at “Walt Disney’s Hometown Toonfest” September 16-17 in Marceline, Mo., where Disney lived from 1906 to 1911.   Among them is JIM BORGMAN, the editorial cartoonist for the Cincinnati Enquirer, and GLENN and GARY MCCOY, who do the recently launched “Flying McCoys” comic for Universal. Glenn also creates “The Duplex” strip for Universal, and editorial cartoons for the Belleville (Ill.) News-Democrat and Universal.

The Missouri event is sponsored in part by Andrews McMeel Universal, parent of Universal Press. For more information, go to www.toonfest.net http://www.toonfest.net
