Block's Will Included Gift to AAEC
Herb Block left $25,000 in hiswill to the AAEC. The Associationhas not yet determined how itwill use the money. In all, the cartoonistleft $1.1 million to variousgroups, including $50,000 to theNational Cartoonists Society.Block, who never married, leftan estate worth around $50 million,much of it consisting of stock in theWashington Post Corporation. Hedirected that most of the money beused to establish the Herb BlockFoundation.
Foundation trustee ClarencePage, a columnist for the ChicagoTribune, said that "Herb had threebig agenda items laid out in his will-- to help kids get an education, toimprove the Washington communityin some way and help makeD.C. a better city, and to encourageyoung editorial cartoonists."
Jean Rickard, Block's assistantfor 44 years, will be the foundation'sexecutive director. She saidthe fledgling nonprofit might beable to make grants of $2 million ayear once it settles into an office.
