BOOK REPORT: Canadians Launch Wartoons

      Canadian War Toons is a 46-page, magazine-format anthologythat reprints over 100 cartoons,some in color, by 45 cartoonistsreacting to the events of September11. It was edited by Ottawa Suncartoonist Sue Dewer and publishedby Sun Media.   • Attitude: The New SubversivePolitical Cartoonists will be publishedin May by NBM Publishingof New York. The book features 21artists whose work epitomizes alternative-weekly political cartooning.

          The 128-page compilation includeswork by editor Ted Rall andfellow AAEC members Lala Alcaraz,Scott Bateman, Joe Sharpnack andMatt Wuerker. Other cartoonistsshowcased are Tom Tomorrow, PeterKuper, Ruben Bolling, LloydDangle, Andy Singer, DonAsmussen, Clay Butler, JenSorensen, Tim Eagan, Derf, EricBezdek, William L. Brown, WardSutton, Stephanie McMillan, MickeySiporin and Jim Siergey. In addition,Rall interviewed all the artistsand asked them to submit ephemerafrom their personal lives."Perhaps because they defyeasy labeling, they're creating themost interesting work in cartooningtoday, Rall writes, "and it's anhonor to help present this newgenre to the public."

  • AAEC member Vaughn R.Larson, editorial cartoonist at TheReview in Plymouth, Wisconsin, hadpublished his first book. In theWurst Way: A Collection of (Mostly)Sheboygan County and WisconsinCartoons came out in Decemberand is described by the artist as "amodest effort to get my feet wet."

  • The 30th anniversary edition ofBest Editorial Cartoons of the Year,edited by retired Birmingham Newscartoonist Charles Brooks, is nowout and on its way to contributors.The 208-page paperback contains400 cartoons. Copies are availablefrom Pelican Publishing of Grenta,Louisiana, for $14.95 each.
