I began drawing political cartoons in 1960 for the Okinawa Morning Star, a civilian-owned English language daily, while serving with the Army on Okinawa. I took my discharge there and went to work for the Star full-time as editorial-page cartoonist and night news editor.
I left Okinawa in 1965 and returned to my hometown of Detroit for a job on the news desk of the Detroit Free Press. I conned my way into a daily political cartoon on the Free Press Feature Page and in 1976 The Detroit News offered me a position as a full-time cartoonist.
I drew five editorial cartoons a week for the oped page until 1994, when the paper decided they could no longer afford the luxury of two full-time cartoonists (The other being Draper Hill). They did offer me a different job that led to my current position as Associate Creative Director of detnews.com, the Detroit News website that went online in July 1995. At the same time they offered me a three-toons-a-week free-lance arrangement for my oped cartoons, which continues to this day.
I drew a syndicated daily and Sunday strip called "Wright Angles" that was syndicated by United Features from 1976 to 1990 by United Features, and I have been drawing a daily cartoon panel called "Kit 'N' Carlyle since 1980 for United Media. Both can be seen on United Media's website, www.comics.com.
My wife Naoko and I live in Canton, Mich., about half-way between Detroit and Ann Arbor, with an extremely unpleasant cat named Motley Coco. We have two grown children and four grandchildren.
