Geoffrey Moss
Forget traditional political cartooning. MOSSPRINTS' creator, Geoffrey Moss, of Creators Syndicate does! Doggedly refusing captions, his is a world of metaphors defining politics--and to Moss, everything is political. An equal opportunity graphic cynic, he answers to no editor. His is an "artist's take on politics." A pioneer working outside the box, his work has changed the design of national op-ed pages beginning with The Washington Post, that paper never having published op-ed conceptual art before Moss. His unique noir drawings garnered him a Pulitzer-Prize nomination for his work on Watergate. During that turbulent time The Art and Politics of Geoffrey Moss, foreworded by CBS' Dan Rather was published, and, Moss became a founding member of The Washington Post Writers Group; it's first cartoonist. Now represented by Creators Syndicate in Los Angeles, he subsequently received a second Pulitzer nomination for his work on 9/11.
With a background of a BFA, and MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture, and a BA from the University of Vermont, Moss paints with a broad brush. From designing a t-shirt with Bruce Springstein for "World Hunger Year", to exhibiting through the Museum of Modern Art and private galleries, his paintings and drawings are part of corporate collections; our industries' Poynter Institute recently acquired one of Moss' large abstract drawings for their permanent collection. His "Bus With White Walls", a very large painting, was selected for the highly visible exhibit "In the Spirit of Martin" at the Smithsonian Institution. Moss has also exhibited through the Museum of Modern Art, and colleagues may remember his "Crossbearer" at the Andy Worhol Museum's "Too Hot to Handle" show last summer. Moss's three sheep (Sheepscicle, Rocketsheep, and Ewespaper), directed by the public art works Cow Parade, for the city of Pittsfield, MA. were part of a charity event that raised smiles and thousands for that city's SHEEPTACULAR.
His latest book "The Biker Code: Wisdom for the Ride," for Simon and Schuster is a collection of photos, interviews, and roadsigns covering America's motorcycle culture.
