Charlie Daniel was born in Richmond, Va.and grew up in Weldon, N.C. He attended Weldon Public Schools and Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va. He was a private in the Marine Corps and studied Political Science at the University of North Carolina, which is where he started drawing cartoons for The Daily Tar Heel in 1955.
Charlie came to Knoxville in 1958 as the editorial cartoonist for The Knoxville Journal. He moved to the Knoxville News Sentinel in January 1992 and has been the editorial cartoonist here ever since.
He was a graduate of Leadership Knoxville, class of 1997 and was the Co-Chairman of the Dogwood Arts Festival in 1998. He is a board member of the Baptist Health System, the Volunteer Ministry (service for the homeless) and is president of the Alumni Board of Fork Union Military Academy.
An exhibit of his cartoons have been on display at the Carroll Reece Museum at East Tenn State University and at the gallery of the new building of the Knoxville News Sentinel in 2003. Four collections of his cartoons have been published.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Patsy Ann Stephenson. They have two children, four grandchildren and one dog Tinka, who is now deceased.
