Ann Cleaves

Ann Cleaves is an award winning cartoonist whose cartoons appear in the Palisadian Post (Pacific Palisades, CA), Random Lengths (San Pedro, CA), and La Prensa San Diego. Her cartoons have also appeared in The Washington Post National Weekly Edition, the Pasadena Star News, and the Temple (TX) Daily Telegram. Several of Ann's cartoons have won first place awards from the CNPA (CA Newspaper Publishers Association). In 2000, she illustrated the best selling book Oh No! Not Another Problem. Currently she is illustrating a book on real estate myths. Her cartoons have appeared in the book Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year since 1993. They have also appeared in several textbooks. Her cartoons were included in a cartoon show about 9/11 at the Impolitic Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. Her cartoons were also included in the USA Patriot Art show in Washington, D.C. , a show honoring Thomas Nast in 2002 and Target California at the California History Museum in Sacramento in 2005. A graduate of Brown University, Ann also studied art at Rhode Island School of Design, The Art Institute in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, and the University of Houston. She began cartooning as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia. Then, as a volunteer in Fiji she illustrated schoolbooks for the Fiji Ministry of Education. She taught art in the Boston public schools and cartooning in Texas. Ann and her husband Courtland live in Los Angeles where she taught high school subjects in the adult division of the Los Angeles School District from 1988 to 2004. Currently she works full time as a cartoonist at her studio at the Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro, CA.

Description of Presentation: Describe experiences as editorial cartoonist. Talk about interpreting cartoons. Also give overview of history of editorial cartoons, particularly in the US.
Length of Presentation: 45 minutes
Availability: Daytime Wednesday through Friday
Terms: $30 for local South Bay (LA) and Long Beach. Additional charge for travel in other parts of LA or Orange County.
