Steve Artley

Steve Artley's work in editorial cartooning twice earned him the "Best Editorial Cartoonist of the Year" award from the Minnesota Newspapers Assoc. His cartoons have been syndicated throughout the United States and Canada, appearing in publications such as Newsweek, the Washington Post and New York Times. His cartoons have been used in school text books, trade books and magazines, congressional publications and news periodicals. Steve has also taught classes in cartooning, creativity and theatre at a private Minnesota arts school. In 2002, Steve was contacted by the US Departments of State and Defense to help in the (so-called) Global War on Terrorism where he conceptualized, scripted, storyboarded, composed musical scores for and directed numerous productions in a variety of media. Steve led a creative teams of writers, video editors and artists in the production of documentaries, public service announcements, multimedia campaigns and other materials in this effort. Additionally, he developed a series of cartoon characters directed at youth to combat terrorism and instruct in a host of other topics including citizenship, health, hygiene, security, mine and unexploded ordnance awareness. Currently, Steve works as a freelance cartoonist in Alexandria, Virginia. He also is an independent creative consultant for the US government, helping in cultural outreach programs, and a variety of other multimedia campaigns. Steve's cartoons appear in one of the Washington DC area's local newspapers, The Alexandria (VA) Times. He draws between 4 and 6 (sometimes more, depending on how he feels and what's going on) cartoons a week, self-distributing them to various news outlets throughout the country.
